Programmes and field trips organised by the
Russell Society Branches for the 2008 spring - summer
seasons. Most of these are listed in the Society's
Newsletter No. 52, March 2008 and on the list mailed to
members at the start of the season. Non-members are very
welcome to to attend an indoor meeting as a visitor before
applying for membership of the Society please contact the
indicated person for the appropriate Branch or this web site.
Members are reminded that when attending any
field trips they must be properly equipped with the
appropriate personal protective equipment. For most this is
safety boots, hard hat, high visibility waistcoat, gloves
and eye protection as an absolute minimum. You will be
required to sign an indemnity form and details of the risk
assessment will be made known to you. As visits are to
working sites operational conditions may prevent entry so
please book in advance for all field trips with the
indicated leader.
Central Branch
Central Branch field trips for 2008. Please
book in advance with the indicated Field Trip Leader.
- Sunday 27th April: (TBC) Quarry,
Markfield, Leicestershire. Leader: Neil Hubbard (01509
414427). Meet at quarry entrance at 09.00 a.m. Field Trip
- Wednesday 28th May: Quarry,
Breedon, Leicestershire. Leader: Neil Hubbard (01509
414427). Meet at 6.00 p.m. in the visitors' car
park. Field Trip
- Saturday 21st June: Quarry, Old
Radnor. Leader: Neil Hubbard (01509 414427). Meet at
10.00 a.m. at quarry entrance. Field Trip
- Saturday 2nd August: Quarry,
Leicestershire. Leader: Frank Ince (01509 263507). Meet
at 09.00 a.m. in the visitors' car park. Field Trip
- Saturday 27th September: Quarry,
Derbyshire. Leader Lionel Burch (01782 517657). Meet at
9.00 a.m. in the visitors' car park. Field Trip

Northern Branch
- Sunday 6th April: Quarry, Pateley
Bridge. Leader: Trevor Bridges. Meet at the quarry
offices at 10.30 a.m. Limited to 15 so book early. Field Trip
- Saturday 10th May: Quarry, East
Layton, Richmondshire. Leader: Trevor Bridges. Our old
friend Dominic Doyle is back. Meet at the quarry
offices at 10.30 a.m. The access track is just west of
East Layton village. Be careful of large trucks coming
the other way! Only 12 places. Field Trip
- Saturday-Sunday 7-8th June: Again
we plan to take part in the North Pennines Geopark
Festival of Geology and Landscape by mounting a mineral
display in the upstairs room at Killhope. I expect the
room will open for visitors from mid-morning. Last year
this turned out to be a good social event, so come if
you can. Event
- Sunday 6th July: Caldbeck Fells.
Leader: Trevor Bridges. Permit only for up to 10
members. We will probably start by walking up to
Driggith and then move over to Sandbed Mine. Ring me
nearer the time to book a place and to get final
details, but the meeting time will be 10.30 a.m.

- Sunday 24th August: Copperthwaite
Workings, Marrick Moor, N. Yorks. Leader: Frank
Bouweraerts. A walk across the numerous old workings on
this stretch of moorland (with good views if the
weather is fine!). Ring the leader for details of the
meeting place.
- Sunday 14th September: Dufton
Mines. Leader: Frank Bouweraerts. A walk up to the old
baryte mines on Dufton Fell. Strenuous. Ring the leader
for details of the meeting place. Field Trip

North-West Branch
Note that all indoor meetings will be held in
Blackrod - at the Secretary's house - unless indicated
otherwise. For Field Trips, contact our field trip
organiser Ian Dossett well before the date. There will be a
maximum of 12 members on each trip. If for any reason you
have to cancel, please contact Ian as soon as possible, as
often there are other members on a waiting list for
vacancies.

in Bulgaria' an illutrated talk by Chris &

Southern Branch
Field trips are limited to twelve members.
Please confirm attendance with Chris Finch. Failure to wear
the specified personal protective equipment at the time of
entry in to quarry will prohibit entry.
- Thursday 6th March: Members
Display Evening - a chance for members to mount a
display of their favourite minerals and give a small
presentation if they wish. At this meeting we shall
also be finalising details for the RS AGM 2008 so it will be a
very important Branch meeting. Indoor Meeting
- Saturday 15th March: Quarry,
Derbyshire. Meet in quarry car park at 09:00. Field Trip
- Fri 28th - Sun 30th March: The
Branch hosts the National RS AGM at Bath. All Southern
Branch Members are urged to attend and help out make

South-East Branch
Meetings of the South East Branch are held on
Sundays at 15:00 in the Wesley Lounge of Beckenham
Methodist Church, Bromley Road, Beckenham. This is close to
Beckenham Junction Station, the bus and tram terminus, and
a large public car park. Enquiries please to Peter Wallace
or Vicki Packard.

South-West Branch
Details of field trip meeting places and times
available from the leader. All trips are limited to 12
members. All indoor meetings will take place at the Indian
Queen's Working Mens Club and start at 19:30 unless
otherwise stated.
- January 2008.: A visit to Plymouth
Museum. This visit has been agreed and will take place
one evening during the last two weeks in January. The
visit will include viewing of the mineral displays and
also some of the material not normally on display to
the public. Numbers will need to be limited for this
visit so anyone interested in attending should contact
Martin Ellam as soon as possible. Visit
- Tuesday 5th February 2008: Zeolite
Minerals. An illustrated talk will be presented by our
branch-secretary, Tony Lee. Tony's talk will cover
a number of personal collecting sites of this
interesting and varied group of minerals. Indoor Meeting
- Tuesday 4th March 2008: Branch
Annual General Meeting. Our AGM will include the usual
sumptuous buffet and Mineral Auction. Further details
will be circulated early in 2008 Branch AGM
